Michael Walzer on the Moral Minimum | Tianxia III 2022
Michael Walzer, Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study, delivered a powerful keynote speech at the Berggruen China Center's 2022 Tianxia III Conference, defending the need to formulate a minimum morality for a planetary order. "The moral minimum is a morality we all know. Internationalism is a politics within our reach as we work for a peaceful and livable world. These are the only tools we have." In his address, Walzer gave an account of the "moral minimum," and defended it against those who believe in absolute/near-absolute singularity (universalists) and those who want an even greater affirmation of difference (particularists, relativists). As we continue to address problems, crises, and emergencies that are planetary in nature, we must ask how far will a minimalist morality take us?
